I find this topic very interesting, since the fundamentals of glassblowing have not changed for centuries or millennia,

which we begin to see documented in printed form in 1556 In Agricola’s book De Re Metallica,

see for example my web page http://www.glassblower.info/rare-books-early-glass-technology.html

for which information I am indebted to the research librarians at the Rakow Research Library at Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG),

and I note also that Dr. Wight is an Executive Director and Curator at CMOG.

Enjoy,

Tony Patti

"First Impressions: The Mold-Blown Glass of Ancient Rome"

Dr. Karol Wight

The New York Metropolitan Glass Club is very honored to announce that our November 4 meeting will be addressed by Dr. Karol Wight, Executive Director and Curator of Ancient and Islamic Glass of the Corning Museum of Glass.

Dr. Wight will be speaking on glassmaking in ancient Rome. In particular, she will discuss how the development of glassblowing in the first century B.C. revolutionized the ancient glass industry and led to innovative techniques in glassmaking and decoration. Among the breakthroughs was mold-blown glass, which was used for a wide variety of purposes, from small household objects to containers used in the transport of commodities across the Mediterranean.

Karol Wight received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was the senior curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum, and from 1997-2005 helped oversee a $275 million renovation, expansion and reinstallation of the Villa.

Dr. Wight assumed her current position at the Corning Museum in 2011. Her responsibilities include overseeing the Museum’s extensive collections and exhibitions, the Rakow Research Library, Museum publications, education programs and conservation/scientific research. She is currently engaged in preparing for the opening of the new North Wing facility, scheduled for March of 2015, which will house the Museum’s contemporary glass collection.

The New York Metropolitan Glass Club meets the first Tuesday of each month (from October through May) at St. Michael’s Church. Annual membership dues range from $25 (student rate) to $90 (for a family). Attendance on a per meeting basis is $15. This admission fee will be credited towards the annual membership fee if an attendee joins the Club.

Our featured speaker’s presentation begins at 7:00 PM and is preceded by a wine and cheese reception at 6:30. After the meeting, many attendees enjoy dinner with friends and fellow club members in one of the many restaurants in the neighborhood.

The Church was decorated by Louis C. Tiffany between 1895 and 1925 and is one of the only extant Tiffany interiors in the New York Metropolitan area. Though we meet in one of the meeting rooms, we regularly arrange tours of the sanctuary to view the wonderful windows, lamps and mosaics by Tiffany Studios.
