Knowing that the energy cost (utility bills) are such a significant
component of glassblowing, I think you may find the following article

<p> ALLOWAY TWP. The landfill-produced methane that will
power a new glassblowing facility on the grounds of the
Salem County Utilities Authority [SCUA] will also be transformed
into electricity for the building, which will provide power
to some 400 homes in the area as well. </p>
<p>SCUA signed a 20-year agreement recently with SC Landfill
Energy, LLC made up of Marina Energy and DCO Energy to
develop the gas-to-electricity project. </p>

<p>The energy company will own and operate a 2-megawatt
electric generating facility on the SCUA site, similar to
several other sites the company owns in the state. </p>
<p>This is the latest step in the "Gas to Glass"
process to bring a Salem Community College [SCC] glass campus to
the land across from the SCUA entrance, which SCUA will
build as well as provide the methane at no charge to the
college. </p>
<p>Chapman said rent from DCO Energy and the energy credits
created should cover the cost of the approximately $2
million building. </p>
<p>SCC will just have to furnish equipment inside of the 14,000
square-foot building, which will be located on 38 acres of
land. </p>
<p> "We're really in the beginning of this, but I
think it's going to be a really great project,"
said Michael Chapman, executive director of SCUA. </p>
<p>He thought of the renewable energy idea several years ago
while on a trip to Colorado, when he visited a glassblowing
center where an artist told him about facilities that run on
methane gas. </p>
<p>Chapman's wife has gone through the glass program at
SCC under artist Paul Stankard's instruction, and he
thought it would be a great opportunity for SCC's
already renowned program to expand. </p>
<p>It also brings glass making back to Alloway the birthplace
of glass working in the United States with Wistarburg Glass
Works, which Chapman called the "Holy Grail" of
glass making.<br>
</p>
<p>He said SCUA started talks with DCO Energy about two years
ago for the venture, and he realized it could fit together
with his hopes for the SCC project. </p>
<p>SCUA already collects gas produced by waste decomposition
and destroys the gas by burning it, so it made sense to put
that to productive use. </p>

<p>It also further protects the environment. </p>
<p> "I thought this would really be a good idea,"
Chapman said. "It brings glass back here which is
pretty cool in itself." </p>
<p>A deal was worked out with DCO Energy based on projections
for the amount of gas that will be produced in the next 20
years. </p>
<p>The energy company will collect the gas, clean and process
it, produce electricity and send gas through underground
pipes to the college facility for glass making. </p>
<p>The gas sent to the college would be valued at approximately
$250,000 a year. </p>
<p>DCO Energy will sell electricity to SCUA at a reduced rate,
and will also improve the electrical grid system between
here and Quinton Township, providing electricity to about
400 homes, Chapman said. </p>
<p>He said they hope to award bids for the school construction
in September, and DCO Energy hopes to have their project
built around March 2008. </p>
<p> "It's a little optimistic, but we think we can
accomplish that," Chapman said. </p>
<p>He said construction could be done on the glass center by
May, allowing it to open for fall 2008 classes. </p>
<p>SCC wanted to expand its facilities because of a growing
number of students and community members enrolling in glass
courses. </p>
<p> "This is a good problem to have," said Dr. Peter
B. Contini, president of SCC. "The partnership with
SCUA will greatly benefit the students and citizens of Salem
County who will use this new facility." </p>
<p>This renewable energy project is the only one of its kind in
New Jersey and is one of only two on the East Coast. </p>
<p>The facility will also include community education programs
for children and adults in the county, and could host guest
artists and draw tourists similar to WheatonArts and
Cultural Center in Millville. </p>
<p>Chapman also thinks it could help downtown Alloway and start
an arts renaissance here. </p>
<p> "What we hope to create with this glass education
center is an art destination," Chapman said.
"That's what we think we can accomplish."<br>
