2007 Winter Update

Season's Greetings from East Falls Glassworks. Although the weather
is getting colder outside, its pleasantly warm in front of a 2100 degree
furnace. We are getting ready to enter our third year, and this
Thanksgiving, we are giving thanks to the Philadelphia glass community
for their continued support and enthusiasm.

Changes at East Falls Glassworks

Change has been brewing at East Falls Glassworks. One of the founders
of East Falls Glassworks, Owen Pach, is stepping down from managing the
studio to focus on his work. We thank Owen for all his contributions and
hard work, bringing the studio from an empty space to its current standing.
Owen will remain involved with the studio, teaching some classes, private
lessons and providing invaluable assistance as its needed.

Stepping up to take over the responsibility of managing the studio are the
team of George-Ann Greth and Phil Vinson. Many of you in the glassblowing
community already know George and Phil; they are both full-time artists
with a broad set of skills to bring to the table.

George and Phil are assisted in the task of running the studio by a talented
group of artists. Those who have not been at East Falls Glassworks in a while
may not recognize all the new faces. Kris, Diana, Penny and Wills are the
new crew, and I am excited about the new possibilities that having such an
excited, dedicated and talented group of folks will bring to bear.

We are working on a new section of the website that will feature information
about and pictures of some of the work created by the people who help keep
the studio running. I'll send out an update once this is complete.

December 8th Open House and Holiday Sale

On December 8th, we will be having our second annual open house and
holiday sale.

Holiday Sale:
The East Falls Glassworks crew is hard at work creating new ornaments, and
beautiful gifts for the season. There will be special markdowns for the
season, it is a great opportunity to pick up a unique hand-made gift for
someone special.

Glassblowing Demonstrations:
While you are here for the holiday sale, watch the glassblowing
demonstrations by the East Falls Glassworks artists as well as other
members of the Philadelphia glassblowing community.

Open Studios: We are a part of a larger community of artists at
Sherman Mills. Many artists in the complex will be opening their studios to
the public on December 8th. It is a great opportunity to meet very
talented artists and craftspeople in their workspaces.

Seconds Sale: A table will be set up with lots of East Falls
Glassworks glass art from the first two years at 'bargain basement' prices.
These are one-of-a-kinds and items with small flaw. As the clearance furniture
guy says: "Everything must go, no reasonable offer refused!!!"

Class Update

Classes through March have been posted on the website.
By popular request, we have added more advanced offerings. Following are some highlights.

8 Week Intensive Sculpture Class (Saturday Afternoon):
This intensive 4 hour/week class is co-taught by Chris Lydon and Brian Regan, two glass masters who will show (and teach) the class how to make almost any form out of glass. This class takes full advantage of the extensive facilities that East Falls Glassworks provides, including all three benches, the garage, bench torches, cold working facilities and multiple pick-up ovens. This class is recommended for intermediate and advanced students. This class starts December 15th.

4 Week Intro I (Thursday Evening): If you'd like to try working with hot glass for the first time or would like a refresher course, this is the class for you. We start with an introduction to glassblowing tools and equipment as well as basic techniques. Every week, a different form will be taught. Lots of exercises and hands-on time is provided to build a solid foundation of glass blowing skills. Class starts on December 6th.

4 Week Intro II (Saturday Morning): For students who are comfortable
with the material covered in the Intro I class, this 4 week class is the next
step. This class will be taught by Jon Goldberg and starts December 8th.

UArts Classes

East Falls Glassworks is proud to host continuing education, glassblowing courses offered by The University of the Arts. These hosted offerings are six week courses, taught in the evening from 6:30 to 9:30. There are two classes on the schedule for the winter/spring.

Glassblowing Basics: Starts Jan 16th.

Glassblowing Guided Studio: Starts March 5th.
You can get complete information about these classes and others offered by UArts
at the University of the Arts
Continuing Education web site.

Show Update

On April 10-13th, an East Falls Glassworks artist, Jon Goldberg, will be
participating in the 26th Annual Smithsonian Craft Show. If any of you will
be in the DC area on those dates, make sure you stop by and visit Jon. You can
check out Jon's online portfolio to see some of the work that
will be on display at the show.

Bad News

We saved the bad news for last. Due to ever increasing raw material prices and
utility costs, we are forced to raise our rental rates. This is the first
increase since we opened. Effective Jan 1st, here are our new rental rates:

Small Glory Hole:$35/hour

Medium Glory Hole:$40/hour

Large Glory Hole:$55/hour
See the rental
information page for more details. We do have some new equipment available
for rental, including a fairly large sandblaster and a slumping/fusing oven. Let
us know if we can help you finish that special project.

We Need Your Help - Spread the Word

East Falls Glassworks depends on referrals for most of our business. Tell your friends about us; link to us
from your website. Spread the word!

Thanks, we look forward to seeing you this winter and in the new year!
