STILL
a work in progress, the future Museum of Contemporary Science in the
Chambersburg section of Trenton — a 50,000-square-foot space, part of
the formerly sprawling Roebling Factory complex — abounds with
potential.

Look up toward the gaping ceiling and you’ll see
some of the old cranes and pulleys that were an integral part of the
factory, which once made the famous steel rope that earned John A.
Roebling his fortune.

Now the space will come alive to
manufacture fun with a festival celebrating all kinds of visual and
performing arts. Produced by Artworks of Trenton, Art All
Night returns
to the capital city June 21, kicking off at 3 p.m. and lasting 24 hours
until June 22, 3 p.m.

The event was such a huge success last year, the
planners decided to kick it up a very big notch — that’s why the MOCS
was selected as a venue.

Michael Gumpert, a member of Artworks who also chairs the planning
committee for Art All Night, says after hearing the
enthusiastic reaction from last year’s attendees, his fellow planners
set the bar extra high this year.

”People
were shocked when they (came to ‘Art All Night’),” Mr. Gumpert says.
“Everybody just loved it and had all kinds of suggestions, and they
were such good ideas we tried to (implement) them. I describe the whole
shebang as a first date. You have the best expectations but you really
don’t know how it will go. Last year 1,500 to 1,700 people came and 370
artists participated. That was the biggest surprise — just how many
artists showed up and how high the quality of the art was.”

The
optimistic Mr. Gumpert thinks the number of event-goers this year could
quadruple and he expects some 800 pieces of art to be on display.

To pull this off, Art All Night is
looking for more than a few good volunteers for a three-hour shift the
weekend of the event, but also a plethora of people to help get the
word out. Volunteers at the event simply watch over the art and report
any unruly behavior to the shift captains.

Art All Night encourages artists of any age, medium and
skill level to submit a work of art.

”Last
year, the art came from all levels, from 4-year-olds to professionals,”
Mr. Gumpert says. “Moms would bring something their kids made, like a
leaf glued to a piece of paper and we’d exhibit that. Then on the other
end of the spectrum, we had contributions from people who definitely
sell their work.”

The extravaganza is free to attend. In
addition to the art on display, Art All Night will
feature live music on two stages, unusual art demonstrations including
glass blowing, fire bowls and an “iron pour,” artistic films including
animation, claymation and stop motion photography, food and libations
and what Mr. Gumpert calls “meaningful” children’s art activities.

”There’s
no face painting,” he says. “The kids are doing the art themselves so
they can feel a sense of accomplishment. There’s also kids music, but
it’s the kind of stuff that adults can enjoy, too. Pretty much all day
Sunday will be dedicated to families and kids.”

Mr. Gumpert reflects that the Art All Night crowd
evolves as the time of day changes. Baby boomers come out early on
Saturday night for a date, then around 11 p.m. the crowd gets younger
and the music gets louder. Things get really interesting around 2 a.m.

”The
whole 24 hours has music on an indoor as well as outdoor stage,” Mr.
Gumpert says. “Inside, Saturday night, there’s a lounge feel with (cool
colored) lighting. Also, Artworks is celebrating its 20th anniversary
so there will be a slide show (screened on one of the walls), showing
our highlights.”

Art All Night is also a “green”
event, using sustainable materials for event signage, requiring food
vendors to use paper vending containers and ensuring that all event
waste is recycled or composted.

The festivities are modeled
after a successful celebration held in Pittsburgh, where Mr. Gumpert, a
native of East Windsor, was living after studying at the University of
Pittsburgh. That city’s version of Art All Night grew in 10
years from 100 works of art and a couple hundred attendees to 1,000
pieces of art and a crowd of more than 10,000.

”I
was a community organizer in Pittsburgh and some people started this
arts event in the Lawrenceville neighborhood, where I was a volunteer,”
he says. “When I moved back here, I suggested the idea to the board at
Artworks and they loved it and went with it.”

Mr. Gumpert,
who works for the state Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency in Trenton,
has also worked with his team to spearhead an effort to get the capital
city’s sizable Hispanic community and significant Polish enclave to
participate in Art All Night.

”We’re going to be
printing a portion of our 30,000 postcards in English on one side and
Spanish or Polish on the other,” he says. “Also, the ‘Art All Night’
home page will have links to general information, directions and the
artist registration form in both Spanish and Polish. Finally, Spanish
and Polish-speaking translators will be present during the art intake
and return times to answer any questions from Spanish and
Polish-speaking artists.”

Some of the goals for Art All Night include
celebrating Artworks’ 20th anniversary, letting people know about the
variety of gallery shows and classes Artworks offers. Mr. Gumpert also
hopes the event will show off Trenton’s rich development potential.

”There
are a lot of buildings like this one, ripe for development,” he says.
“We’re also trying to get people excited about Trenton as a cultural
destination.”

This
kind of happening might flourish quite organically in a place like New
York or San Francisco, but you might not imagine Trenton throwing a
giant arts party.

”That’s one of the reasons ‘Art All Night’
was so successful here,” Mr. Gumpert says. “Usually, people don’t have
the option to do something like this unless they go to a big city, but
there’s no reason ‘Art All Night’ can’t happened here in Trenton. I
think people are sick of going to the video store and Applebee’s.

”Seeing
the diversity of the people who attended last year was my proudest
moment,” he continues. “There were so many different types of people
here — from folks who were obviously affluent to young families with
kids to senior citizens, all lifestyles and races. The common
denominator was art and everyone came out.”
