"PLAYING WITH FIRE:

50 YEARS OF CONTEMPORARY GLASS"

 Jennifer Scanlan

Associate Curator - Museum of Arts and Design (MAD)

St. Michael's Church - 99th Street between Broadway and

Amsterdam Avenue

January 10, 2013

Jennifer Scanlan, Associate Curator of the Museum of Arts and Design, will
lead off the 2013 lecture series of the New York Metropolitan Glass Club
with an overview of the exhibition "Playing With Fire: Fifty Years of
Contemporary Glass," currently on view at the Museum.

Curated by Ms. Scanlan, the show celebrates the 50th anniversary of the
birth of the American Studio Glass movement. Ever since 1962 when a
legendary workshop led by renowned glass artist Harvey Littleton
demonstrated the potential of glassblowing, artists and designers have
continued to push the material in new directions and used the complex,
fragile, and highly versatile nature of the medium to create an astonishing
diversity of works. The show will feature more than 100 works of glass from
the collection, as well as promised gifts, and additional contemporary works
on loan.

Ms. Scanlan will discuss the spectrum of artists included in the exhibition
- from early adaptors and Studio Glass artists such as Dale Chihuly and
Marvin Lipofsky to artists and designers not commonly known for their work
in glass, including James Turrell and Ettore Sottsass. She will also
explore new directions in glass, such as photography and videos. This show
will expand your definition of glass art.

Ms. Scanlan has a BA in Art History and Italian from Vassar and an MA in the
history of decorative arts, design and culture from the Bard Graduate
Center. She has organized a number of exhibitions at MAD, including "Paul
Stankard: A Floating World," "Cheers! A MAD Collection of Goblets," and the
"Simona and Jerome Chasen Art Collection." She has written for a broad
collection of publications and has lectured widely both here and abroad.
