Nuance brings theatre of glassblowing to Stockholm Arlanda Airport

SWEDEN. Some of Sweden's top glassblowers are demonstrating their work live in front of passengers in Nuance's walk-though duty free store at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, in an event showcasing the country's glass art.
The ‘Kingdom of Crystal’ glass event, which began on 28 August and concludes on 5 November, is a collaborative project between Nuance, Målerås Glassworks, Orrefors, Kosta Boda, Glasriket (Kingdom of Crystal) and Växjö Co.
Each day, glassblowers demonstrate how they transform red-hot molten glass into crystal on a bespoke stage in the walk-through duty free store in Terminal 5. The pieces they create are placed in a cooler overnight and can be purchased the next day, under the ‘Kingdom of Crystal’ brand.
Nuance Sweden General Manager Joakim Hörnfeldt said: “We are very happy to partner with such exquisite glass masters and showcase their skill and talent. I am sure that this event will appeal to our customers making their visit to Stockholm-Arlanda a memorable one.”
The event has seen an oven installed in the store and, although it burns 24/7, its heat cannot be felt from outside. Glass in placed in the oven each evening so that it can melt overnight, at temperatures of up to 1500˚C, ready for the next day’s production.
Arlanda Schiphol Development Company Managing Director Roel Huinink said: “We are developing Stockholm Arlanda Airport to be the aspirational gateway to Sweden, where we have the ambition to bring exciting experiences to our passengers.
“It was a challenge to bring a 1500˚C hot oven into an airport, but with this installation, the only glass oven from Småland in an airport, passengers get a fantastic insight into the world famous Swedish glass art.”

The Kingdom of Crystal (Swedish: Glasriket, The glass realm) is a geographical area today containing a total of 15 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glassblowing> glassworks in the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipalities_of_Sweden> municipalities of <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmaboda> Emmaboda, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nybro> Nybro, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uppvidinge> Uppvidinge, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4xj%C3%B6> Växjö and <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lessebo> Lessebo in southern <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden> Sweden. Their history can be traced back to the 18th century at least. The glassworks have become part of the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Sweden> culture of Sweden; examples can be found in many Swedish homes, recognizable by a small sticker at the bottom with the name <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orrefors_Glasbruk> Orrefors, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosta_Glasbruk> Kosta, etc.
When touring the forested <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Sweden> province of <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sm%C3%A5land> Småland in Sweden, it is normal to visit at least one of the glassworks. The larger ones have adjacent museums and are open for visitors to see the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_blowing> glass blowing hall, normally looking down from a platform. Food is available as well as shopping for all kinds of glass products such as glasses, bowls, vases and unique glass ornaments.
The more notable are <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orrefors_Glasbruk> Orrefors Glasbruk, with the adjacent <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_School_of_Glass> National School of Glass and <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosta_Glasbruk> Kosta Glasbruk, which is the basis for the <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosta_Boda> Kosta Boda company. Each one of the glassworks have distinctive design traditions, character and atmosphere.
