Wistarburgh glass works topic of Pennsville Historical Society program
PENNSVILLE TWP. - The Wistarburgh glass works and the archaeological
findings there will be the topic of the program at the Pennsville Township
Historical Society's Quarterly Meeting on Wednesday July 16, 2014.
The guest speaker for the meeting will be Bill Liebknecht who will speak
about the archaeological findings at the Wistarburgh glass factory that was
located in Alloway NJ and the insights that were derived from those
findings.
He has served as principal investigator for Hunter Research, Inc. of Trenton
and has more than 20 years of experience supervising archaeological surveys,
excavations, and laboratory processing projects in New Jersey, Delaware, and
Pennsylvania.
The glass industry loomed large over Southern New Jersey for the better part
of two centuries. The establishment of the Wistarburgh Manufactory is
generally credited with giving birth to the American glass industry and has
left a legacy of glass production that still exists in the tri-county area.
The Wistarburgh Manufactory was established by Caspar Wistar, in 1738. At
the age of 22, Wistar emigrated from Germany arriving in Philadelphia in
1717, virtually broke, with nine pence and a rifle.
Although little is known about the financial success of the Wistarburgh
Manufactory, upon Caspar Wistar's death in 1752, he had become one of the
leading merchants and wealthiest men in the middle colonies. A look at
Caspar Wistar's life shows that he was a quintessential entrepreneur.
Liebknecht is always interested in seeing and assessing artifacts. If you
have an artifact, a piece of glass or shard that you believe to have
originated in the tri-county area, you are welcome to bring it to this
meeting.
The Pennsville Township Historical Society
