Delaware Township glass artist Don Gonzalez will be exhibiting his sand cast
glass sculpture along with Italian painter Armando Bossola at a gallery in
Venice, Italy for the month of December.
Mr. Gonzalez states that "it is an honor for my designs in Glass to be
accepted in Venice since they already have an abundance of their own Murano
Glass. Casting Glass in molds made of sand is a glass-making technique that
isn't done in Murano, and they seem to be interested in both my technique
and designs"
Gonzalez has a part time life in Venice. Over the past ten years, he has
become a specialist in 19th and 20th century Italian Glass, now historical
and quite valuable on the collector market, and he returns important finds
to antique dealers in Venice and to Glass families in Murano.
His colleagues include Venini in Murano, who have purchased 15 pieces, and
six antiquarians in Venice specializing in historical Italian Glass. Mr.
Gonzalez states "I am privileged to be able to spend 2 months a year in
Venice, and my finds of important Italian Glass bankroll my travel and
sometimes I actually return home with some income after spending a month,
usually October and March, when the tourist quotient is low and the weather
is still great! I have established an identity in Venice as a merchant,
returning the historical Italian Glass to its origin. However, for this
journey, I am thrilled to be in Venice in my artist identity. In Italy, we
say "fantastico!"
Don Gonzalez has received four Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State
Council on the Arts and served a term on the Arts Council's board of
directors. Twelve pieces of his designs in Glass are in the permanent
collections of seven museums throughout the country, including the Newark
Museum, the New Jersey State Museum, and the Museum of American Glass at
Wheaton Arts, where he is also the recipient of a Creative Glass Center of
America Artist Fellowship.
Following the opening of the exhibition, Gonzalez returns to his studio in
Stockton where he will conduct weekend glassblowing workshops December 10-11
and 17-18. The workshops are open to anyone who has a curiosity about
working with Hot Glass. Those signing up for the workshops will have an
opportunity to see Don Gonzalez's collection of nearly 500 pieces of 19th
and 20th century Italian Glass, in addition to his entire body of designs in
Glass. Detailed information about the glassblowing workshops can be seen at
