CORNING - The Corning Museum of Glass recently partnered with Toronto-based
Marblemedia and Blue Ant Media for the production of the upcoming Netflix
glassblowing series Blown Away.
The upcoming show will feature 10 glass artists from around the country who
will create glass artwork and present their creations to a panel of judges.
One artist is eliminated each episode until a winner is left standing in the
season finale.
Among the prizes awarded to the winner is a residency with CMoG.
"For us in the museum it's just important to help people see glass in a new
light and to ... spread awareness of the possibility of this material," said
Eric Meek Sr., Manager of Hot Glass Programs at CMoG, regarding his
participation in the program.
Meek served as a guest evaluator in the season finale, while six of CMoG's
glass artists - Helen Tegeler, Catherine Ayers, George Kennard, G Brian Juk,
Tom Ryder, and Chris Rochelle - provided assistance to the two finalists
during the final episode.
Meek said the best part of his and the museum's involvement in Blown Away
was the opportunity to spread glassblowing to an entirely new audience - one
who may be unaware that this type of artistry existed to begin with or who
had never put a thought toward what's required to create glass in the first
place.
"The thing I think was the potential audience, the new audience, and being
able to share what we do and what we love with a broader audience," he said.
"And of course, by our involvement, inviting them to come to Corning and see
glassmaking for themselves, and maybe make glass for themselves."
Blown Away is scheduled to premiere Wednesday on the Makeful channel in
Canada, and is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime in 2019.
